Badlands, SD - June 2020. After 90 days of quarantining in the same house, I was in desperate need of a change of scenery. I jumped in the car and drove 12 straight hours to the Badlands of South Dakota, arriving just as the sun began to set in front of the hills. At this point I was no stranger to isolation, but there was something comforting about being the only person in the park... I hope this print brings you the same peace and serenity it brought me! It's easy to get stuck looking downward and inward, to be weighed down by the pains and concerns of the world. For me, going out and taking photos of this comet was a reminder to look up, to dream, and to hope. It was a reminder that there is still magic in the world. For a few hours, sitting on the shores of Devils Lake, the worries and concerns of life disappeared and were replaced by appreciating the lonely traveler in the sky on its 6,800 year journey. On a week-long storm chasing endeavor in the Northern Plains, with nothing else save for the rolling grass hills in sight, I spotted this farmstead from the side of the road. I wish I knew the stories of who lived here, and how it fell into disrepair. Broken down, but still worth a lot to someone, it made me stop and grin. I'm talking no cell signal, in Bavarian Germany, and no wifi in your airbnb on the slopes of the Alps. It was a much needed reset. Most of the week was spent in clouds and rain, which had its own magical feeling seeing the mountains occasionally appear and disappear into the grey void. On the final day, however, the clouds parted and revealed the true scale and beauty of our surroundings. Part of my soul never left after that day. If there's one moment in all of my life I could return to, it's right here in this photo. Straddling the border between Austria and Germany, it was hard not to be taken away by the incredible panoramic view of the mountains. But winding its way up between the trees and through the hills, making its way up the slopes famed for "The Sound of Music", this lonesome road caught my attention. The advantage of the road less traveled is the story you get to share after the journey. View printing options for purchase here!Berchtesgaden, Germany - October 2019. I'm not a morning person. Its just not in my nature. International travel has a way of breaking sleep habits, however, and on this morning I'm quite thankful it did. Waking up before sunrise, I made my cup of hot tea, cooked up some breakfast rosemary potatoes, and decided to sit outside on the balcony of my airbnb nestled in the hills of the German Alps. As the sun rose over the Eastern horizon, it painted the tops of the trees in a magical golden color. Maybe I should wake up early more often... I sure do miss those quiet mornings. I had just finished a long conference outside of Munich and was on my way into the German Alps of Berchtesgaden to spend a week in quiet isolation. I'm pretty sure that I doubled the length of my drive to get there, because around every corner, I stopped and took pictures of the mountain views peeking out from behind the clouds and mist. It set the tone for the week, with a quiet stillness and subtle beauty. View printing options for purchase here!Berchtesgaden, Germany - October 2019. The power and beauty of mountains can be overwhelming and all encompassing. It's quite easy to focus on scale and magnitude when taking photos, trying to cram as much of the scenery into one frame as possible. From the road that traced the summit of this portion of the Alps in Berchtesgaden, straddling the Austrian border and amidst the clouds, however, presented the opportunity focus in on the detail, texture, and complexity of these ancient giants. Oh how small we truly are. View printing options for purchase here!Madison, WI - August 2019. One of my favorite things about Madison are the sunset lake views on Lake Mendota. Every Friday evening of the summer, I would go sit by the lake, enjoy live bluegrass music, and consume some spectacular Door County Brewing. I tried for weeks to get this shot, and finally one night, a lone sailboat made its way across the lake in line with the sunset. View printing options for purchase here!Madison, WI - August 2019. For being the state capitol, Madison is a surprisingly quaint city with lots of character. It's not too crowded or dense either, and you can walk from one lake to the other across the isthmus, giving it an intimate feeling. Something else that I love is that no building is allowed to be taller than the state capitol, meaning its always visible from anywhere in the city. It makes for some incredible sights... view printing options for purchase here!Madison, WI - August 2019. I've spent many Friday evenings at the Edgewater hotel. Every Friday during the summer is what's called the Brewgrass Fish Fry. Fried fish, bluegrass, and Door County Brewing. It's one of my favorite parts of summer, being down by the water and watching the sunset. If I were to recommend something as the quintessential Madison experience, this would be it!
